The 2022 Ford Mustang GT California Special channels the spirit of iconic 1968 original model.

"California Made It Happen," was Ford's marketing mantra back in the '60s when a high percentage of Mustang and Thunderbird sales happened in this state. Driven by the desire to make something special, Ford dealers from California pushed forward a limited-edition Mustang called the GT/CS or California Special. They aimed for a 5,000-unit production run but didn't quite reach the numbers in the end.

Nevertheless, the Ford Mustang California Special is still alive, and the survival of the nameplate marks an even greater success for Ford dealers. In 2022, Ford reintroduced this well-known version of the iconic Mustang with more than a couple of updates, including the GT/GS package. The 2022 Ford Mustang GT California Special is a tribute to the 1968 model, but it also stands as an independent and admirable performer.

With a stylish design, impressive specs, and modern characteristics, the 2022 Ford Mustang GT California Special joins the current limited Ford car family. Here's why we like it, and what we like the most about it.

Ford wanted to bring forth the free spirit of the 1968 California Special with the 2022 modern version, which is why it first introduced a convertible body style with a folding soft-top. This way, the new California Special achieves classic looks and provides an enjoyable wind-in-your-hair driving experience (again, to pay tribute to the warm California climate).

As you probably know, the first California Special was inspired by the 1967 Shelby GT, so it got a blacked-out grille, fog lights, side racing stripes, and a distinctive Shelby spoiler. The 2022 version, following its predecessor, bears a honeycomb grille finished in black and enriched with a red GT/CS badge. There are also black, red, and grey side stripes and a hidden California Special script that lights up under direct sunlight.

Alongside the attractive free-spirit styling we like so much, the California Special comes in nine vibrant exterior colors. The same distinctive styling got translated into the interior. Inside the 2022 Ford Mustang GT California Special are premium materials and advanced technology of modern times, such as heat and cooled front seats, a 12-inch customizable instrument cluster, and SYNC 3 connectivity. All this should provide more joy during rides, especially on open roads.

We should also mention that the 2022 Ford Mustang GT California Special aims to recreate the highly aerodynamic design and enhance overall performance (which we'll talk about soon enough). A large front splitter, rear side air scoops, and similar neat components build this ride. RELATED: Ford Mustang Is Turning 60 In 2024 And Will Come With This One Big Change

While some new Mustang models have received a few criticisms lately on the not-so-motivating quality of the interior, it's hard to argue with the practicality. The California Special features a pretty straightforward layout inside with leather seats and door inserts finished in gray suede. The GT/CS logos on the seats and floor mats add a nice touch to the picture, but otherwise, everything is smooth and neat.

Without a doubt, the interior of the 2022 Ford Mustang GT California Special is not overly luxurious, but we like that it's pleasant, elegant, and highly functional. The features are easy to use, and the SYNC 3 communication and entertainment system has all those niceties we want in a modern car, starting with navigation, climate controls, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and more. Of course, standard safety and driver-assistance features are also included.

We haven't yet even mentioned the performance. Expectedly for its class and heritage, the 2022 Ford Mustang GT California Special doesn't disappoint with the specs. With a 5-liter V8 engine delivering 450 horsepower, a six-speed manual transmission or 10-speed automatic transmission, and the 4.4-second acceleration from 0 to 62 mph, the California Special is more than a decent performer. These specs only further enhance its adventurous and vibrant spirit.

Now, it's essential to highlight that you don't get some niceties of the California Special without opting for the GT Performance Package. Stripped bare of this package, the GT convertible and fastback only bring in the GT/CS design elements and standard performance. For increased power, sportier suspension, Brembo brakes, specially-trimmed seats, and other appealing additions, you need the GT Performance Package.

We should also mention that only the fastback gets a performance rear wing. The California Special convertible goes without a spoiler.

It may be true that not everyone needs the GT Performance Package, but most are likely to enjoy it tremendously. With better handling and driving dynamics, improved styling, and some other niceties, the 2022 Ford Mustang GT California Special will provide that promised free spirit without limitations.
