2021 Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition sells for more than an NSX - Drive

One buyer has paid classic NSX supercar money for a Civic – albeit one of only 20 Type R Limited Edition hot hatches sold in Australia.

One of 20 Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition hot hatchbacks imported to Australia in 2021 has sold for nearly 60 per cent more than its list price – before taxes and buyer’s premium are applied.

Number seven of the 20 Civic Type R Limited Editions made available locally – with one kept by Honda Australia for marketing purposes – has sold on online auction platform Collecting Cars for $110,000, after 51 bids earlier this month.

Adding GST, stamp duty and the mandatory ‘buyer’s premium’ to the sale price takes the on-road price beyond $120,000 – almost double the car’s original list price of $70,000 drive-away in 2020.

For context, the three Australian-market, first-generation Honda NSX super sports cars sold by Collecting Cars have an average sale price of about $110,000, before buyer’s premium and taxes. $120,000 could buy two and a half 2022 Civic VTi LX hatchbacks, if purchased new.

The final (and fastest) iteration of the ‘FK8’ generation Civic Type R, and limited to 1020 cars globally, the 19 Limited Edition customer cars were sold by Honda Australia through a lottery in late 2020, and delivered towards the middle of 2021.

Based on the facelifted 2020 Type R, the Limited Edition adds lighter 20-inch forged BBS alloy wheels which save 10kg, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 track tyres, modified damper units, retuned steering and adaptive damper software.

Australian models were fitted with air conditioning and infotainment screens as standard, like the regular Civic Type R – contrary to overseas markets, where these items were stripped out as standard (but available to add back as an option) to save weight.

All examples were finished in a unique Sunlight Yellow II colour inspired by past Type Rs, offset by gloss black finishes on the roof, mirror caps and bonnet vent, and a dark chrome Civic badge on the tailgate. Each car featured a serial plate denoting its position among the 20 Australian examples.

The example sold on Collecting Cars lists 494km on its odometer, with – unsurprisingly – all original owner’s manuals, service books and maintenance guides included, and “unfitted, factory-supplied floor mats”.

The ‘Vehicle Owner Details’ section in the car’s logbook has also been left blank for the new owner – suggesting reselling the car soon after purchase might've been planned from the outset.
